Thou: Very active and hard-working band
Thou - Magus

Human habitation in the Baton Rouge area has been dated to 1200 – 6000 BC, based on evidence found along the Mississippi. Whether it has been played music all the time is more doubtful. At present, it is a fact that the band Thou from Baton Rouge plays a reasonably exciting music. The band has been around since 2005 and has released very much music, including five full-length, and the last one from Thou, Magus was released some days ago.
Magus is Thou’s first full-length since 2014’s Heathen. Thou have earlier this year released three drastically different EPs: The House Primordial, Inconsolable, and Rhea Sylvia. Each record will focus on a particular sound—noisy drone, quiet acoustic, and melodic grunge—all of which is incorporated into the new LP, subsumed in the band’s more doom sludge metal. To say that Thou is a very active and hard-working band is a fact.
Magus is a collection of eleven slow-burning metal tracks that show the group rejuvenated with fury and horror. Where 2014’s Heathen and their last collaboration with The Body, You, Whom I Have Always Hated left off, Magus is a captivating work that’s as beautiful as it is punishing. On Magus Thou continue to generate enough intrigue behind their efforts, proving that when they choose to scrutinize themes and ideas within their wheelhouse, they manage to be one of the few metal acts who can accomplish it with absolute certitude.
While sonically, Magus may be a continuation of Heathen, thematically it stands as a stark rebuttal, a journey beyond the principles of pleasure and pain. It is more the culmination of these distinct EPs, which all orbit some internal black hole. FFO alienation, absurdity, boredom, futility, decay, the tyranny of history, the vulgarities of change, awareness as agony, reason as disease.
