Bands of members who have never met each other have become quite common. Ecovillage is one of them. Emil Holmström and Peter Wikström have played togheter for a long time. They where and are fascinated of the fantastic work of the amazing acoustic band Fernwood.
Therefore they asked Fernwood maestro Gayle Ellett help them with some overdubs, etc. Ellett have played on all of their 5 records since then, and their last offering is the album Sacred World.
Gayle Ellett have an incredible impressing music CV! Ha have played on over 100 albums, done music for 60 TV series, currently play in 7 bands, etc. For more info take a look here.
It`s obvious that Ellett and co. is very busy right now. Here’s a video Ellett made, for Djam Karet’s current album Sonic Celluloid. He made it from free footage he got, from companies that give away short lower-resoluton clips … of their larger videos. A friend helped him edit it together.
Currently, Djam Karet is working on a new album (or 2!) due out in early 2019. It will be their 19th album!
Back to Ecovillage. Holmström and Wikström plays a wide range of instruments! Synthesizer, electric piano, Rhodes piano sampling, percussion, meditation drums, acoustic guitars, music boxes, sampled voices, cello, flutes, Steinway grand piano, electric guitars, sitar, field recordings from around the world. The duo is from Umeå north west in Sweden. The band`s latest effort iSacred World was released on Nov 13th 2018 on cassette & digital download.
Founding members Emil Holmström and Peter Wikström of Ecovillage say of their new album Sacred World, «It’s almost like this new album created itself, the creative process has been very effortless. This album has been an expansive interior journey for us and will hopefully be for the listener as well. Much of course because of the great help, inspiration and contribution from longtime collaborator Gayle Ellett (Djam Karet, Fernwood) who has been involved with the Ecovillage project since the beginning and is almost like a third member of the band. We definitely had in mind to make the album meditative, spiritual and colorful, to help the listener transcend and experience the stillness within».
There is no recent video from the new album, but here is one from one of the previous albums.
On Sacred World Gayle Ellett plays harmonium, dilruba, surmandal, guitar, 8-string tenor ukulele, wooden flutes, tanpura, udu, ocean drum, windchimes, ebow, and field-recordings from Topanga California and Morocco. In addition Erik Plamberg plays trumpet on the album`s last song, Artur.
Emil Holmström and Peter Wikström, have been working on different music projects, and together since 2001, but in 2006, after a 3 month of a journey together in Indonesia, Cambodia, Thailand, and Laos, they found some otherworldly inspiration to create Ecovillage, an experimental ambient world music group with a desire to explore the spiritual path to union with life’s essence, the source of all that is.
Sacred World is Ecovillage’s fifth studio album. Their debut album was Phoenix Asteroid, and their second album With Fragile Wings We Reach The Sun.Their third album was One Step Above and their fourth album Jesus Of Nazareth.
