Best Norwegian music from 2018

Many critics out there claim that Norway is the new progland and that we are now leading! It is comparable to what was once with black metal and the way it is on the jazz front

1. Tusmørke – Osloborgerlig Tusmørke – Vardøger Og Utburder, Vol.1

The album is a concept album about various local history and myth and this is very good, well played and thrilling music.

Kanaan plays an amalgam seventies of psychedelia, post rock and fusion improvision and the music is very suggestive.

Vegard Sverre Tveitan is Ihsahn and he is forever looking for the development of his music. He really achieved this with Àmr, who is his best and that says a lot!

Weltschmerz, baby! is a very exciting album due to the originality and the personality of the musicians that dare do thing in their own way.

5. Jordsjø – Jordsjø

Jordsjø is inspired by old horror movies, german synth music from the 70s, Swedish prog, fantasy novels and Norwegian nature, and have their own distinct and nice sound.

Progatom offer an album with melodious symphonic prog, spiced with big contrasts, nice guitars, demanding arrangements and also with classic prog sounds.

Oak have taken several steps as songwriters and musicians since the previous album, and ended up in a slightly darker and more progressive territory.

I never thought I should listen to death metal! The young Kolbotn band Obliteraration delivering a grizzly yet flawless monument to death metal the way it was meant to be, obscure, ominous and unpredictable.

Elephant9 is described as an offshoot project from members of Norwegian groups Shining and Supersilent. The band deliver a music where the unpredictability meets groove and the pure joy of playing their brand of jazzrock.

The album has nice harmonies, and plenty of variety, and many great guitar solos, and it’s well-crafted and intelligent melodic death metal music.

Mitt hovedfokus er musikk som er basert på progressiv tenking. Jeg er på ingen måte ensporet innen musikksmak, i likhet med intensjonen bak prog. Sjangerbegrepet er egentlig temmelig uinteressant annet enn til å gi en pekepinn om hva slags musikk det er snakk om i en anmeldelse. Jeg søker god musikk for å utfordre meg som lytter. God musikk til å trigge mine musikalske smaksløker, og til å sette i gang mine refleksjoner. Da er sjansen stor for at jeg utvikler meg og lærer, noe som bør være drivstoff for et hvert menneske. Fordi det å lære og utvikle seg er noe som tilfører livet en nødvendig porsjon "krydder". Slikt krydderet finner man blant annet i musikk. Ikke overraskende mener jeg at progressiv musikk har den fineste "smaken". På den annen side kan musikk med eller uten progressive elementer være godt nok til hverdags. Til fest derimot holder bare rendyrket prog! Må jo også få med at jeg rimelig kritisk, og jeg mener at det lages mye prog som er i beste fall uinteressant, og faktisk mye som er pinlig dårlig. Heldigvis oppveies dette av ekstremt dyktige aktører som for eksempel: Flower Kings, Mostly Autumn og White Willow, for å nevne noen tilfeldig valgte.
