An Akward Choice is the first You Tube video from the fifth album Hybrid Hymnes from Professor Tip Top.
Playing out of Bergen, Norway, Professor Tip Top was formed in 2011, but the members are veterans with musical backgrounds going back to the early 70`s. The band plays a mix of pop, psychedelia, prog and jazz. The new album will be released February 22. The music is written by Sam Fossbakk, guitarist and passionate synth nerd. Bassist Stein Høgseth and drummer David Sundby are providing an nice rhythmic foundation. Hybrid Hymns shows that the band has developed their identity in a more psychedelic manner.
The songs have clear retro vibes are partly melodic with vocals, while adding longer instrumental parts of guitar. In addition there are analogue sequencers, vintage synths and keyboards in between. Inspiration and influences are the 60’/70’s versions of Gong, Yes, Pink Floyd, and the Canterbury scene.
The lyrics are written by singer Svein Magnar Hansen. As an atheist, he finds the spiritual music in the band a good place to describe a world without divine entities, not without humor and silliness. The topics on Hybrid Hymns are contemporary issues, alienation, a world with a scientific level out of reach to the common man, a frustration to the progress in digital colonization of our everyday life, artificial intelligence as a dehumanization, political dissolution and confusion. But after all, at the bottom we are just humans, irrational, emotional and vulnerable. Fans of old school prog would probably enjoy Hybrid Hymns.
