Caravela Escarlate: A huge step forward
Caravela Escarlate - Caravela Escarlate

Caravela Escarlate is the project of multi-instrumentalist David Caravelle who decided to work with keyboard player Ronaldo Rodrigues former member of the band Massahara and Arcpelago. Caravela Escarlate was founded in Rio de Janeiro in 2011. The band have struggled to find a permanent and proper drummer until they found drummer Elcio Cáfaro. The first album Rascunho was mostly electro acoustic but contains some great melodies that will be transformed in a more electric style for the new album. The music on Rascunho is 70’s symphonic prog in the style of Sagardo.
Soon Caravela Escarlate will worldwide release their 2nd album. This is probably an album for fans of keyboard trios like ELP, Trace or Triumvirat, and Planeta-Estrela is an examples of what Caravela Escarlate can offer to the listeners.
Caravela Escarlate was originally self-released in Brazil in 2017, and is a big step forward from their debut Raschuno. Where the debut was more acoustic, Caravela Escarlate is much more keyboard-driven classic prog rock. The album is heavily inspired by both English and Italian 70’s prog, but also by traditional and popular Brazilian music, which makes their musical blend quite special. The track Atmosfera should fans of symphonic prog and especially the 70s retro style definitely check out.
While the music almost sounds like it could have been recorded in 1973, the lyrics in Portugese, have a bit of a more modern touch, inspired by science fiction, comic books and environmental concerns. The main character is Caravela Escarlat’ itself, which translated to Crimson Ship. It is an alien character from sideral space, which can transform into its own vehicle of transport, in specific a ship. And what better foundation for a spaced out retro prog album than that?
