The band Hoia is the brainchild of the excellent Indian musician Prateek Rajagopal known for his contribution to bands like Gutslit and The Minerva Conduct. Prateek Rajagopal sings, plays guitars, synth, electronics, piano and digital manipulation. The other musicians in Hoia project are the experienced drummer Wojciech Deręgowski from the band Rosalie and as a session musician. He have finesse, dynamics, flow, ideas, strokes, and gives a very nice performance on Scavenger the first full length album from Hoia. Colin Edward from Porcupine Tre and Twinnscapes played a fretless on the entire album. He add a clean and unique glue to the songs and give them even more depth and freshness.
The song Write Across from Scavenger
Scavenger have many unexpected elements that fits very good together, and the twist and turns will probably satisfy the adventurous listeners. The songs are very experimental and often very interesting. Rajagopal is a real virtuoso guitarist. Enjoy and listen. He is a film composer and writer/producer for death metal band Gutslit and the Indian/American prog metal super group The Minerva Conduct.
Rajagopal interest in genres and art forms beyond metal gave rise to Hoia, inspired by Avant-garde, progressive rock, experimental and industrial music. He says «The album deals with human-sentimentality concepts like nostalgia, demise, anxiety and the need to Scaveng to survive, bubbled in fictitious concepts as individual stories. It isn’t a concept album, but there’s a loose relation across the individual stories».
Scavenger is by all means a bunch of great songs! The observant listeners will find something new that surprises and catches their attention. Fresh sounds, a lot of space and emotions at the same time. Scavenger has been in the works for over 2 years and clocks in at 33 minutes, and are a nice follow up to the two earlier EP`s. The new record has a more sophisticated songwriting approach compared to his previous releases, albeit still very prog’ and also features Rajagopal as a vocalist for the first time. The instruments used on the album are unlike his other projects, using samples of rotating fans and vehicle sounds, analog synthesizers and digital manipulation along with organic instruments like guitars (acoustic, electric), piano and strings.
