The music is as mentioned earlier based on the modern SciFi classic novel The Player Of Games by Iain M. Banks. If you like SciFi and have not already read Banks’ Culture novels, they are highly recommended. The book tells the story of Jernau Morat Gurgeh, a citizen of the pan-Human Culture and famed player of games of all kinds. His success has started to pale into boredom. Younger players challenge his supremacy and grow ever closer to defeating him. The track Style Over Substance,
Set in a distant future where genetically enhanced humans and sentient machines including drones’and’minds have created an advanced society. The Culture, through its shady dirty tricks organization known as Special Circumstances, maintain relationships with many alien societies. The track The Prize, Pt. 1 / Talk To The Machine,
When a new and distant society is discovered whose existence is entirely based upon a game which determines social status and political power, Gurgeh is manipulated by a scheming drone to undertake a diplomatic’mission to represent the Culture in the incredibly complex game. But, as he soon realizes, the empire of Azad is corrupt and immoral, and his mission is more subtle and infinitely more dangerous than he has been led to believe.Lyrically, the songs provide an impressionistic response to the storyline, rather than trying to simply retell it.
