An honorary man in music has an anniversary today. Congratulations on 60th birthday Andy Tillison! Andy Tillison (born 21 June 1959) is a British keyboardist and singer are probably best known for his work in the progressive rock bands Parallel Or 90 Degrees and The Tangent. Everything starts a place of course, and Tilson`s career started with the unsigned band Gold Frankincense & Disk. Later Tillison and guitarist/vocalist Guy Manning had an early unsigned band called Drive. The band’s final line-up also included Hugh Banton on organ and Dave Albone on drums. Actually one song by this line-up, A Gap On The Night, was later included on Parallel Or 90 Degrees debut The Corner Of My Room from 1996.
Tillison and Manning enjoyed making music together and hence the band Parallel Or 90 Degrees was born and again together with Sam Baine on keys. On PO90 second album Afterlife from 1997, there were a change in the line-up. Tillison, Baine, Lee Duncan (drums), Jonathan Barrett (bass) and Graham Young (guitar). Young was later replaced by Gareth Harwood. PO90 have released seven album and the last one Jitters came ten years ago. While playing for PO90 Tillison was keen on making music as a solo artist. This started out as a mere project and was actually intended to be a Tillison solo effort before it became a full-fledged band as Tillison felt the need to produce something more typically prog than he’d been doing in Po90. Seventeen years ago band The Tangent was a fact.
The Tangent was originally formed by Andy Tillison, Guy Manning and Sam Baine as well as half of The Flower Kings including Jonas Reingold, Zoltan Csorsz and guitar virtuoso and former Kaipa member Roine Stolt. Of course to put further icing on the cake David Jackson of Van Der Graff Generator would lend his legendary sax to the band for their debut album The Music That Died Alone from 2003.
I really loved that album and I realized that I was a proghead! The band The Tangent is still alive and have produced ten very good albums. The tenth album Proxy came last year.
