Ekos: Fighting minds obsessions and bending reality
Ekos - Instinto

Ekos integrates metal, electronic, hard rock, prog, classical and whatever other influence that comes to inspire their music. Instinto is Ekos third album and is one of the first prog release this year. Ekos are always faithful to write their Spanish roots with lyrics in their native language. The lyrics deals with time domination fantasies, inner fears and demons, bending reality, and fighting mind obsessions. These topics are underlined with colorful instrumental passages and original soundscapes and nice cord progression. The track Contraste is an acoustic song with very nice dual vocal, and a departure from the band`s usual sound. The acoustic guitar is cleverly supported by the other instruments.
Instinto is showcase an interesting and fascinating music and a very skilled instrumentation. Some of the music is epic and very good prog songs, there are moodier song and rock drenched songs and calm moments. Overall the songs are brave, catchy, varied and with a very nice interaction between the musicians. The track Mi Vida En Ti (My Life In You) are pretty beautiful and interesting and with a very fair amount of splendid guitar lines. Atmospheric, ambient and melancholic and as a bonus an abrupt and creative ending.
Ekos was founded as a Pink Floyd cover band fifteen years ago. As all good musicians wanted to write their own songs, and soon they transform their emotions in sounds, in truths, lies and fantasies to a creative exploration off music. They were and are inspired by the progressive atmospheres of groups like Pink Floyd, Dream Theather and Porcupine Tree and other alternative bands like Radioheads. Mi Vida en Ti (My Life In You) has a beautiful intro, a somewhat melancholic song adorned with tasteful work on guitar, pleasant ambient and an abrupt but nice ending.
The track Creando Vacíos, (Creating Vacuums), is a very varied and epic song with very much going on but in a very good way. The song starts intriguing and then calms down before a exciting keyboard solo, and in addition all the other instrument get the chance to be in the spotlight.
Creating Vacuums is the tour-de-force of the album, a great Prog epic on which all the members have a chance to be in the spotlight, with a strong beginning that slows to a calm section which builds up to an awesome instrumental section on which a great keyboard solo sets the pace for a rollercoaster of musical emotions on which all members have an opportunity to shine. Surely it will become a most requested song live.
Overall a diverse and very enjoyable album on which every song has its own personality, and with the right length of nearly 44 minutes, it really should attract the attention of a broader range of followers of this excellent band.
