Timelight was formed in 2013 in Portland Oregon with a vision of creating expansive musical landscapes. This group continues to conceive and produce highly aspirational and adventurous music. The band commenced originally as a trio by Chris Rudolf (guitar, vocals) as an outgrowth of his solo work with a lineup that included Steve Lauer (drums) and Stevie Williams (bass, keyboards).
The later addition of Ron Murvihill (keyboards, vocals, flute) coincided with the recording and release of their first album, Timelight in 2016. The debut album has compositions written by Chris Rudolf and Ron Murvihill further polished by the creative contributions of each band member. The result is a tight album with a big sound and much thoughtful musical material to contemplate.
Due to the challenges of relocation to Seattle, Washington, the group’s lineup changed and Timelight`s focus shifted to creating music primarily as a studio band. Chris Rudolf took over the bass guitar duties after some contributions from Ian Siegel, and Ron Murvihill programmed drum parts with an ear toward creating an eclectic yet playable drum style. Writing and recording continued with this new format. The track Wings Of Fire,
These efforts produced Timelight`s second album entitled Selah! which was released in 2020. The album features several extended length compositions and sophisticated arrangements. The music incorporates elements of classical, metal, fusion, and other styles, yet is wholly unconcerned with what genre boundaries it may cross. The lyrics encapsulate the philosophical, social commentary, science fiction and myth.
Chris Rudolf`s musical interests are wide and diverse encompassing many genres of rock, jazz, classical, choral and various ethnic musics. Modern progressive metal bands and also groups representing glory days of progressive rock in the 1970’s influence his approach to music, composition and performance. He also finds inspiration from French and Spanish Impressionist era pianists, choral ensembles, finger-style acoustic and classical guitarists and the explorations of jazz improvisers. In addition to his work with Timelight, he has produced and released a solo album titled, Chris Rudolf.
Ron Murvihill brings significant musical talent and compositional abilities to the band. Ron’s first passion is the prog. Throughout his 35 year musical journey he has composed, recorded, and performed hundreds of musical works ranging from renaissance brass music to experimental electronic music. He has composed and recorded with big bands, played thrash jazz on keyboards, played trombone with an authentic Puerto Rican salsa band, composed and recorded new age piano, composed incidental music for the theater, performed original folk music with guitar and voice, recorded dozens of electronic works, and performed extended original classical piano pieces in the style of the great prog rock pianists. With Timelight, Ron returns to the music that drives all of his musical endeavors, bringing with him the energy and creativity of his rich experience.
