Caligonaut announces the release of the first single and video for the title track from the debut solo album Magnified As Giants on February 5th 2021. The music video is by photographer Anne-Marie Forker, known for her work with Marillion. The song Magnified As Giants features backing vocals by Andreas Vilthagen and mellotron/keys by Lars Fredrik Frøislie from Wobbler.
The core of the song features an acoustic guitar in Robert Fripp’s New Standard Tuning and Bjørndal’s vocals. Bjørndal then adds several layers of electric and 12-string guitars, all tuned differently, which produces harmonies reminiscent of early Genesis and Led Zeppelin. In the middle part of the song Wobbler members Andreas W. S. Prestmo and Lars Fredrik Frøislie perform backing vocals and Mellotron and Moog, respectively.
Bjørndal says: «The story in the song is about a person’s catharsis and transcendence of a memory of a relationship that meant a lot, but is now holding them back». Forker’s video reflects this story. The vocals include a powerful, ear-catching refrain and beautiful harmonies arranged by Prestmo.
The song is the shortest of the four tracks on the album, which belongs within a classic prog rock landscape inspired by the guitar and bass work of King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis and Rush, but blended with the more modern sounds of Tool and Opeth.
Caligonaut is a word composed of the Latin words for mist/dimness, caligo, and traveller/navigator, naut, lyrical themes that are also prominent on the album. The single’s artwork was created by visual artist Marte Bjørndal. The album is mixed by Lars Fredrik Frøislie and mastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo.
