UK power/prog metallers, The Spectre Beneath, unleash their follow up album, The New Identity Of Sidney Stone, to their acclaimed debut album, The Downfall of Judith King’. Modern, complex and bombastic, The Spectre Beneath blend infectious melodies, churning guitar riffs and a healthy dose of pace. Building on the story telling of the debut, The New Identity Of Sidney Stone is a power, progressive album for the COVID age and beyond.

The Spectre Beneath represents the darkness lurking inside us all. The power and prog influences shine above all others but the darkness of thrash and doom always lurk under the surface. Their new album, The New Identity Of Sidney Stone, builds on the story telling for their debut to create both stand-alone stories and the tale of Sidney Stone, a criminal betrayed, his death faked and then buried alive.

The Spectre Beneath aims is to bend the tropes of each aforementioned genre to create a modern metal sound without relinquishing the very best aspects of each style. Bands such as Queensryche, Megadeth, Nevermore and Unleash The Archers showcase what can be achieved both musically and thematically and were heavy influences in both the approach and production.

In early 2018 when Pete Worrall, guitarist for Plague And The Decay, began writing new material for the aforementioned band, little did he know how much the songs would alter his focus. The ideas were more melodic, more infectious and more grandiose without any of the intensity being compromised. It did not take long for the songs to manifest themselves into a brand new project, The Spectre Beneath.  Knowing PlagueAand The Decay’s drummer, Consta Taylor, had the flair, the skills and technique to play the music’s more intricate elements, PeteWorral brought him on board. Vocalist, L Lockser, was the culmination of an eighteen month search for a suitable singer. Her eclectic mix of influences meant she was not predisposed to Metal’s rubber stamp approach, a perfect fit for what Pete had in mind. With a rich, warm tone coupled with both power and subtlety in equal measure, L’s voice and unique phrasing added a depth and uniqueness to the band’s sound. There aren’t many female vocalists in metal that sound like L.

The Spectre Beneath expands on the blueprint from their debut album and once again creates a diverse yet heavy and exciting collection of songs.  From the up-tempo and catchy Voice In The Static, to the blazing melodic thrash of Clockwork Heart, to the grinding doom of The Funeral to the theatrical The Premature Burial.  The Spectre Beneath’s new album is dramatic and grandiose affair that never forgets the genre’s most exciting elements.

God musikk til å trigge mine musikalske smaksløker, og til å sette i gang mine refleksjoner. Da er sjansen stor for at jeg utvikler meg og lærer, noe som bør være drivstoff for et hvert menneske. Fordi det å lære og utvikle seg er noe som tilfører livet en nødvendig porsjon "krydder". Slikt krydderet finner man blant annet i musikk. Ikke overraskende mener jeg at progressiv musikk har den fineste "smaken". På den annen side kan musikk med eller uten progressive elementer være godt nok til hverdags. Til fest derimot holder bare rendyrket prog! Må jo også få med at jeg rimelig kritisk, og jeg mener at det lages mye prog som er i beste fall uinteressant, og faktisk mye som er pinlig dårlig. Heldigvis oppveies dette av ekstremt dyktige aktører som for eksempel: Flower Kings, Mostly Autumn og White Willow, for å nevne noen tilfeldig valgte.
