Official video for Relentless Alteration, the first single from Danish/American hyperthrashers Terminalist and their debut album The Great Acceleration. Relentless Alteration kicks things off and gets straight to the point, setting the tone for the rest of the record.
The world is dominated by speed. And as speed drives the story forward, it constantly accelerates in a self-reinforcing dynamic. Such is the basic claim of dromology, a speed science devised by the French philosopher Paul Virilio (1932-2018). This is the basic idea on which the new Danish-American sci-fi thrash metal band Terminalist bases their musical universe. On the debut album The Great Acceleration, they grasp the mindset of dromology and add it to their own science fiction fantasies as they describe a world in upheaval and a globe in collapse collapsing in favor of a colonization of space.
The band’s lead singer, guitarist and lyricist Emil Hansen elaborates on the song’s theme:
«Our modern world is permeated by crises and constant changes that seem to increase in size and scope. This track and its accompanying montage video are about feeling the stable foundation crumble beneath it and as a consequence seeking upwards and outwards – a movement that is both exciting and frightening».
Terminalist was formed in 2018 and debuted the following year with the EP Abandon All Liberties, which in 2020 was followed by the single Voyagers. The four-man band goes back to the traditional and technical thrash metal of the 1980s and fuses it with the blastbeats of black metal, the growl vocals of death metal and the grandiose concepts of prog rock. The result is an expression that is retro in its appeal and modern in its mix – and which the group has dubbed hyperthrash.
The band follows the thrash’s tradition of social critique and future pessimism as they use the dromology to describe the duality of technology and examine Virilio’s philosophical thesis that the invention of the ship was also the invention of the shipwreck. At the same time, they carry on a thread among newer bands that use the monstrosity of metal to illustrate the settlement of the current society in favor of a new one that appears both speculative and probable. It takes place in a music that is aggressive, fast, melodic and dynamic – and which with its artistic ambitions and conceptual weight extends far beyond the Danish borders.
The Great Acceleration was recorded and produced by Lasse Ballade (Alchemist, Deiquisitor, Genus, Worm, etc.) in Copenhagen Ballade Studios during the summer of 2020 mastered by V. Santura (Triptych, Dark Fortress) in German Woodshed Studio, and the artwork is created by Ryan T. Hancock. The album will be released on May 7, 2021 on vinyl, tape and digital formats via Indisciplinarian, and the physical formats – including the vinyl editions limited to 300 black and 100 red copies.
