Tim Dahl - Solo

Solo is the title and concise descriptor of Tim Dahl’s debut album independent of a group. It solely features Dahl on electric bass and vocals and was recorded live in the studio with zero overdubs.

Although one can imagine this process and the tools used within it as potentially limiting, the musical spectrum covered on this album is as broad and varied as one might hear from a large ensemble, with the polyphony and wide timbral and pitch ranges associated with them. Aesthetically Dahl showcases his trademark sound and style while also drawing upon his professional experience in the avant-garde, noise, Free jazz, underground rock, and modern composition genres. The results are a showcase of 12 futuristic/non-idiomatic pieces of music as well as skits interpolated between them.

The skits function as situations commentary on the process of producing the album itself. With SOLO, Dahl seamlessly brings his whole musical universe together into a singular reduction that is as compelling as any of his works prior. The album will be available on CD and as a digital download through 1584 productions and at Bandcamp as of September 28, 2021.

Tim Dahl is an active bassist, composer and occasional vocalist in the avant-garde, noise, rock, Free jazz, and experimental international music scenes. Residing in New York City, Dahl is mostly known as a band member of Lydia Lunch’s Retrovirus, Child Abuse, The Flying Luttenbachers, Pulverize The Sound,and GRID, all of which he has recorded, performed and toured with extensively.

Mitt hovedfokus er musikk som er basert på progressiv tenking. Jeg er på ingen måte ensporet innen musikksmak, i likhet med intensjonen bak prog. Sjangerbegrepet er egentlig temmelig uinteressant annet enn til å gi en pekepinn om hva slags musikk det er snakk om i en anmeldelse. Jeg søker god musikk for å utfordre meg som lytter. God musikk til å trigge mine musikalske smaksløker, og til å sette i gang mine refleksjoner. Da er sjansen stor for at jeg utvikler meg og lærer, noe som bør være drivstoff for et hvert menneske. Fordi det å lære og utvikle seg er noe som tilfører livet en nødvendig porsjon "krydder". Slikt krydderet finner man blant annet i musikk. Ikke overraskende mener jeg at progressiv musikk har den fineste "smaken". På den annen side kan musikk med eller uten progressive elementer være godt nok til hverdags. Til fest derimot holder bare rendyrket prog! Må jo også få med at jeg rimelig kritisk, og jeg mener at det lages mye prog som er i beste fall uinteressant, og faktisk mye som er pinlig dårlig. Heldigvis oppveies dette av ekstremt dyktige aktører som for eksempel: Flower Kings, Mostly Autumn og White Willow, for å nevne noen tilfeldig valgte.
