Bard was a professional poet in medieval Gaelic and British culture. Many hundreds of years later, The Mighty Bard reappears with the prog band The Mighty Bard. Mighty Bard is an eccentrically English rock band playing classic progressive rock.
Benji says, «I’m really excited to be a part of the renaissance of the Bard after we collectively spent far too long writing and noodling versus getting some of these great tunes out to the Progressive world, who also wrote the lyrics for the new song. Prog has always been my first love, and in Magician, I hope our fans will get the same happy place feeling I have when giving it a spin».
Following the July release of Magician, The Mighty Bard’s first new music for eight years, the Aylesbury-based prog rock group have today released a brand new single: Illusion. Illusion is taken from the band’s upcoming album, Beyond the Gate, which will be launched independently by the band in late 2022.
Featuring founder band members Dave Clarke on Guitars and Neil Cockle, formerly of Silmarillion, on keyboards, alongside Benj on vocals, Mark Cadman on bass, Mark Parker on violin and Tom Mear on Drums, Illusion can be downloaded for free from www.tmbmusicshop.com and is also available on all streaming services.
Guitarist and founder member Dave Clark adds, «We’ve gone a bit quiet of late, but the release of Magician draws a line in the sand on our lack of activity,. We can’t wait to release new music in the months to come, and I hope the unique and eclectic mix of music on Beyond The Gate, starting with Magician, will make up for the amount of time we’ve spent away». The track Magician,
Guitarist and founder member, Dave Clarke, says: «We strive for an eclectic mix of music on our albums and our fans can rest assured that we will deliver that on Beyond The Gate. Illusion is a departure for us in some ways: it features all the Mighty Bard trademarks – layered keyboards, lush guitars and beautiful vocal harmonies – but at just shy of four minutes, it’s got to be the shortest song we have written so far!».
The Mighty Bard are:
Benj – Vocals
Dave Clarke – Guitars
Neil Cockle – Keyboards
Mark Cadman – Bass
Tom Mear – Drums
Mark Parker – Violin
Mighty Bard is an emotive, original and quintessential British progressive rock. Based near the historic prog rock heartland of Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, The Mighty Bard was formed in 2004 by Dave Clarke and Neil Cockle, original keyboard player with a band formerly known as Silmarillion.
Dave and Neil spent some time bringing their ideas together and writing material before recruiting Mark Cadman on bass and Gavin Webb on vocals, with all four shaping the core of the band’s material in Neil’s loft studio.
Ably assisted by Aleem Saleh, Ian Sands and Andy Dovey on drums, The Mighty Bard embarked on a series of festival and gig appearances around Europe including Guilfest, GranitArena and support slots for Prog royalty, the Enid.
The band released its first album in 2014: Blue God And Other Stories. Featuring epics Blue God, Heart of the Strangelove and Bird and the emotive and powerful No Flesh is the New Dream, the album’s unique yet classically progressive sound proved a hit with critics and audiences alike on release.
Following a couple of departures during the writing and recording of the band’s upcoming second album, a line-up change now sees The Mighty Bard feature Tom Mears on drums and Mark Parker on violin, with Benj replacing Gavin as lead singer.
Illusion and first single, Magician, will feature on the band’s second album, Beyond The Gate, which is due for release in late 2022 and brings a whole new dynamic to The Mighty Bard sound and the progressive musical landscape. Featuring a nuanced blend of light and dark textures, innovative rhythms, time signatures and song structures, the album’s other tracks include Guarded Secret, Compound the Problem and Secret Garden, bookended by Beyond The Gates Parts 1 & 2.
With the genre enjoying something of a renaissance as people the world over look for more substance than style in their music, Beyond The Gate showcases the impressive talents of the revitalised The Mighty Bard – a band that takes its inspiration from the past to define a unique sound for our music.
