Glacier are a melodic progressive rock band based in the North East of England and have been in existence since the late 70’s early 80’s. All music is their own original work.
Glacier blend many elements from melodic / progressive rock, jazz and classical music, with strong vocal melodies and intricate instrumental passages to form their unique brand of music. Specific references are hard to give, but think Pendrqagon, Cyan and many of the more obscure English prog bands from the eighties and you should have some idea.
Scheduled for release in 2021 The Man Who Cried is taken from the third Glacier album Island In The Sky. The track pays tribute to Joseph Merrick and was inspired by David Lynch’s touching film The Elephant Man (1980). Island In The Sky was relapsed two days ago.
Joseph Merrick (referred to as John in the film) was a hideously disfigured young man who lived in late Victorian London. Known as The Elephant Man, his fate was to be a caged sideshow amusement in London’s streets. Widely regarded as an imbecile, he was treated terribly by his owners. A doctor, Frederick Treves liberated Joseph and discovered him to be an articulate and gentle human. Merrick became the toast of London society, until his failing body, ravaged by an aggressive form of fibromatosis, eventually gave up.
Glacier dates back to 1979, when using the band name Glass Ear – they were misunderstood and booked to play under the name of Glacier. During the past 20 years there have been numerous break-ups and reformations with lineup changes as well.
The band stated some times ago, «Well we were planning on marking the 40th anniversay of the band with the release of the new album, plus a few gigs to promote Island In The Sky. Sadly at this moment in time that’s more Pie In The Sky 😉… however over the next couple of months we will be uploading some tasters from the new album…».
Glacier released monument in 2001 and fourteen years later Ashes For The Monarch.
