Jefferson Airplane was an American rock band based in San Francisco, California, an exponent and pioneer of psychedelic rock. Founded in 1965, they defined the San Francisco sound and were the first in San Francisco’s Bay Area to achieve international success. They were the main attractions of three of the most famous American rock festival in the 1960s: Monterey (1967), Woodstock (1969) and Altamont (1969), and the first Isle Of Wight Festival (1968) in England.
Their 1967 breakthrough album, Surrealistic Pillow, is ranked among the most influential recordings for the era of Summer Of Love. The classic crew of Jefferson Airplane, from October 1966 to February 1970, was Marty Balin (vocals), Paul Kantner (guitar, vocals), Grace Slick (vocals), Jorma Kaukonen (first guitar, vocals), Jack Casady (bass), and Spencer Dryden (drums). The group broke up in 1972 and split into two bands, Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship. The Jefferson Airplane was incorporated into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1996 and was awarded Grammy’s annual lifetime achievement award in 2016.

The facts on the origin of the band’s name are disputed. One argument is that Jefferson Airplane got its name from the mythical blues player Blind Thomas Jefferson Airplane.
