Novus Rex: Dramatic cinematic sound!
Novus Rex – Belteshazzar’s Dream
Today I have a band that probably is perfect for you if you enjoy the vibe of keyboard and synthesizer driven 1970s progressive rock mixed with tinges of jazz fusion and dramatic cinematic soundtracks and electronic this album will satisfy! One of the strengths Novous Rex have is that they one minute could sounds like Yes, but with elements of Pink Floyd, Genesis, ELP, Starcastle, and King Crimson, all mixed together. There is so much to describe in how the music of Novus Rex and that is very attractive to me. The band have released their new album Belteshazzar`s Dream. The title track Belteshazzar’s Dream,
Novus Rex have to musicians J. R. Fernandez and his son A. I. Fernandez. J.R. Fernandez states, «We want the focus on the music. Plus, our names are generic, so we decided to go the abbreviation route. Had we had some unique names we might have used them… I’m J.R, the dad… I’ve been around music for a long time. I play all of the keyboards and drums, and some of the guitars and try to sing a little bit, too. My son A.I. is a young guy, he’s actually in High School, and plays 4 or 5 instruments… Losing count! Plays guitar, bass, sax, flute and some vibes; and drums, too. He’s quite talented with the instruments. He’s been playing music since he could speak, practically». The track Loctus Swarm,
There are even some flute parts Belteshazzar`s Dream but they are buried a bit and used sparingly, some of the synth sounding flute is actually flute. The flute is present in the beginning of the album. J.R. Fernandez says he is «I’m a prog head from the original days… The 70’s». Fernandez started with Chick Corea and E.L.P and in addition Santana and the album Abraxas opened up his eyes for everything else. Then, of course, came Yes. The Yes album, that was a different type of music that came after E.L.P., so basically he came to prog via the keys first, which is why he`s so into the keys. The track MCMXIV,
Belteshazzar`s Dream is both accessible and suitably complex and J.R. Fernandez proves that he is a gifted musicians and composer. He also use both tradition and technological innovation. The album is with tons of keyboards-oriented prog and sprinkled with Fernandez featureless. The keys have definitely some metal keys feel, and some jazz moments, and it`s smart to listen to the album many times. Then you might discover all the subtle details.
