Kayo Dot: Exciting convergence of violence and serenity

If you want to hear prog music probably unlike most music you ever have heard you should try the band Kayo Dot from Brooklyn. The band describe their music as, an avant-goth, progressive experimental doom, abstract electroacoustic black modern compositional metallic. Very interesting and fascinating music indeed! Kayo Dot was founded sixteen years ago by members of the progressive metal band Maudlin Of The Well. Kayo Dot powerfully integrates elements of modern classical composition with the layers of guitars and vocals more common to rock and metal. With a compositional map that is strict in form yet malleable in execution, Kayo Dot uses a vast array of instrumentation to create an exciting convergence of violence and serenity.

Kayo Dot has been subject to several line-up changes, although the constant members are Toby Driver on bass, lead vocals, guitar, clarinet and keyboards.The band released their debut composition, Choirs Of The Eye, on John Zorn’s label Tzadik in 2003. This album captures atmospheric metal with avant-garde overtones with an evocative and sincerely experimental approach. Choirs Of The Eye continues the combination of metal and atmospheric compositions which Maudlin Of The Well are known for, and is a good entry point for new listeners.
