Minimum Vital: Sophisticated and luminous imaginary folklore

Bègles is a suburb of Bordeaux and the city is world famous for often making exceptionally very good quality wines. The band Minimum Vital from Bègles is not world famous, but makes often exceptionally very good quality music. Minimum Vital is a band I’ve always appreciated, and of course I have all the music they made! The album Air Caravan is their new effort and the album was released some days before Christmas.

Minimum Vital have been around since 1983, and initially the twin brothers Thierry & Jean-Luc Payssan founded the band back then. Now the band are responsible of a massive discography and having toured outside of France and overseas, they are sailing between rock music, prog, jazz, Celtic and Medieval. All of this reaching toward an imaginary folklore which melted recently with some oriental influences. The band deliver singular musical landscape, sophisticated and luminous.

Minimum Vital creates often very lush vocal textures with very interesting harmonies, and as a bonus some very infectious rhythms. They mix art-rock influences from Yes, an amazing virtuosity coming from fusion, many innovations and a deep mark from medieval and southern European traditional music. From these diverse elements, France’s Minimum Vital has certainly its own individuality on the desk of progressive rock.
