The Dewerstone is based on myths and legends surrounding the area in which TrveSovereign is based (South Devon and Dartmoor, England). A bit like a concept album but not really, as each song tells its own story. Here is a list of each song and the story behind it:
1 (The Sepulchre):
The Sepulchre tells the story of Richard Cabell. A man whose evil reputation was such that his death in 1677 was, it is said, presaged by a pack of spectral hounds who came from the depths of the moor to escort his soul to hell. Cabell is also believed to be the inspiration for the wicked Hugo Baskerville, one of the central characters in Conan Doyle’s novel The Hound of the Baskervilles.
2 (A Giant’s End):
A Giant’s End retells the legend of Goemagot the giant, his battles with Brutus the first king of Britain and his final fight with the Trojan warrior Corineus on Plymouth Hoe.
3 (Between Life and Death):
Between Life and Death tells the true story of John “Babbacombe” Lee (c. 1864 – 19 March 1945), an Englishman famous for surviving three attempts to hang him for murder.
4 (Macabre Visions on a Midsummer’s Eve):
Macabre Visions on a Midsummer’s Eve is based on the myths and legends surrounding Classenwell (Crazywell) pool, Dartmoor. It is claimed that at dusk the waters call out the name of the next parishioner to die and that their face can be seen in the surface of the pool at midnight on Midsummer’s Eve.
5 (The Dewerstone):
The Dewerstone, on the southern edge of Dartmoor is known to be a favourite haunt of the Devil. With his pack of wisht hounds he would drive sinners to the edge of the cliff, never once touching them, where they would then fall onto the jagged rocks below.
6 (Wrath of Cutty Dyer):
Cutty Dyer is an evil water sprite that lives under bridges along the Yeo River. Generations of this town’s “naughty” children have been warned to keep away from the Yeo or Cutty Dyer would cut their throats and drink their blood. He is also known to prey on drunken men from the local tavern.
7 (Stranger in the Fog):
Stranger in the Fog tells the story of Jan Reynolds and his encounter with the Evil Rider who terrorized Widecombe Church and Tavistock in 1638.
8 (Vixana):
Between Princetown and Tavistock stands the largest mass of granite on Dartmoor, known as Vixen Tor. Many years ago Vixen Tor was the home of a wicked old witch named Vixana. The Dewerstone’s final track tells the tale of her demise.
