Temple Of Switches – Four

Four is the new album to the band Temple Of Switches from USA. This album continues our alchemy of rock, jazz and classical influence with blistering organ and guitar, odd harmonics and heavy drumming.

Riding on an avalanche of musical ideas these songs came together rather quickly. The music is played with sarcasm and intensity, then passing through dark and melancholy, into the ethereal and back into the light. A musical journey of sorts.

Since our inception in 2012, Temple of Switches has been knocking down the boundaries of who we are musically.

Each release has been a foray into new territory.

To sum up our sound, it is dark, contemplative, dissonant, melancholy, heavy, sarcastic, and unrestrained. We strive to make our studio recordings edgy and each release stretches further into darker corners of the musical landscape. It is for the most part meant to please the smaller audience that has become tired of the banal and cliche.

The music does not easily fit into any category, but the common thread that runs through all Temple compositions is the subtle use of jazz and classical influence, and particularly the use of odd harmonics, polychords and dissonant piano chords. Lead solos are constructed and composed rather than using scales.

The primary focus of the music is on instrumental pieces, and the texture and color of the sounds, and how the sounds and notes work together across the instruments, much like painting a picture.

The compositions that do have lyrics are most often abstract, and usually employ sarcasm and lament.

Since 2016 Temple of Switches has been a studio band and the music is primarily written and produced by me, Tenk Van Dool, with an occasional collaboration.

Starting with the album Helium Parade, The musicians on these releases have been on a revolving door of sorts, some of the original band members have stepped in and out, and respected musicians from outside the band have been employed as well.

In 2020 Drummer David White took the drum throne for the Wings Of Mind album which won us featured artist of the month on, and as of this writing we are working on our fourth release, which was out in Feb. 2022.

Mitt hovedfokus er musikk som er basert på progressiv tenking. Jeg er på ingen måte ensporet innen musikksmak, i likhet med intensjonen bak prog. Sjangerbegrepet er egentlig temmelig uinteressant annet enn til å gi en pekepinn om hva slags musikk det er snakk om i en anmeldelse. Jeg søker god musikk for å utfordre meg som lytter. God musikk til å trigge mine musikalske smaksløker, og til å sette i gang mine refleksjoner. Da er sjansen stor for at jeg utvikler meg og lærer, noe som bør være drivstoff for et hvert menneske. Fordi det å lære og utvikle seg er noe som tilfører livet en nødvendig porsjon "krydder". Slikt krydderet finner man blant annet i musikk. Ikke overraskende mener jeg at progressiv musikk har den fineste "smaken". På den annen side kan musikk med eller uten progressive elementer være godt nok til hverdags. Til fest derimot holder bare rendyrket prog! Må jo også få med at jeg rimelig kritisk, og jeg mener at det lages mye prog som er i beste fall uinteressant, og faktisk mye som er pinlig dårlig. Heldigvis oppveies dette av ekstremt dyktige aktører som for eksempel: Flower Kings, Mostly Autumn og White Willow, for å nevne noen tilfeldig valgte.
